Using XSL Transformations – uPerform On-Premise Manuals

An Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) file allows you to control the layout of rendered XML pages. XSL files are used to control the display of the website. The XSL files are stored on the application server in the \WWW\[MyCustomSkinSite]\transform folder. Before making changes to XSL files, you must create a custom folder. For more information, refer to Customizing the Delivered Website Folder.

NOTE:

A complete tutorial on XSL transformation is beyond the scope of this manual. Several books and websites discuss this topic in detail. In particular, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) provides helpful information at http://www.w3.org/Style/XSL/.

The /WWW/schema folder contains .xsd files that assist in defining the schema for the XSL files. These .xsd files should be used as a reference only; do not make changes to these files.

Guidance on XSL Transformations

The \WWW\[MyCustomSkinSite]\transform folder contains the following XSL files:

about.xsl	Controls the display of the "About" page.
account.xsl	Controls the display of the "My Account" page.
adddiscussion.xsl	Controls the form for end users to become a discussion recipient.
confirmation.xsl	Controls the "Request Account" confirmation page.
context.xsl	Controls the display of "bread crumb" text and is not available in the website skin. This file is used by other .xsl files.
discussion.xsl	Controls the display of the "Website Discussion" page.
document.xsl	Controls the display of the content cover page.
editanonymouslanguage.xsl	Controls the display of the "Select Your Language" page for anonymous users.
editmyalerts.xsl	Controls the display of the "Edit My Alerts" page.
editmyfavorites.xsl	Controls the display of the "Edit my Favorites" page.
editmysubscriptions.xsl	Controls the display of the "Edit My Subscriptions" page.
editsubscription.xsl	Controls the display of the "Subscribe" page for documents, folders, and discussions.
folder.xsl	Controls the display of the project title page and "Areas" folders.
form.xsl	Controls the display of the "Edit My Account Page", "Add New Message", "Request Account", and "Change Password" pages.
glossary.xsl	Controls the display of the glossary page.
header.xsl	Controls the display of the website header. This is a global modification and is not available in the website skin. This file is used by other .xsl files.
help.xsl	Controls the display of the help page.
helpdesk.xsl	Controls the display of the help desk page.
home.xsl	Controls the display of the home page.
imports.xsl	Imports common transforms on all pages and is not available in the website skin. This file is used by other .xsl files.
nav.xsl	Controls the display of the navigation toolbar and is not available in the website skin. This file is used by other .xsl files.
objectimages.xsl	Controls the display of images on the website, ensures that the correct image is linked to the correct object, and is not available in the website skin. This file is used by other .xsl files.
removediscussion.xsl	Controls the form for end users to remove themselves from a discussion.
report.xsl	Controls the display of the "My Assessment Report" page.
reportdata.xsl	Controls the display of the tables within the "My Assessment Report" page.
resetpassword.xsl	Controls the display of the "Reset Password" page.
search.xsl	Controls the display of the "Search Results" page.
stringutilities.xsl	Contains various utility functions that can be used in the other .xsl files.
tellothers.xsl	Controls the display of the "Tell Others" page.
top.xsl	Controls the display of the "Projects" page.
unsubscribe.xsl	Controls the display of the "Unsubscribe" page.

Modifying XSL Transformations

This section provides options on modifying website skins 02, 03, and 04. These options do not work with website skin 01.

Perform any of the following options:

If You Want To	Then
Display hidden sub-folders	Update the variable hideEmptyFolders in imports.xsl to "false()". The empty sub-folders are hidden by default from end users on the end user website. Dynamic website folders are never hidden since the content available is not known until the user accesses the page.
Display an empty Areas section	Update the variable hideEmptyAreasSection in imports.xsl to "false()". The Areas section is hidden by default from end users on the end user website if there are no sub-folders available.
Display an empty Content section	Update the variable hideEmptyContentSection in imports.xsl to "false()". The Content section is hidden by default from end users on the end user website if there is no content available.
Hide the type icons	Update the variable includeTypeIconsInContentSection in imports.xsl to "false". The Content and Areas sections now display type icons next to item names for end users.
Hide descriptions on the search page	Update the variable includeDescriptionInSearchResults in imports.xsl to "false()". The search page displays document descriptions to end users by default.
Access different content formats	End users can select the web optimized view of content with the option to download or print files for offline viewing if available. If a publication is not available in HTML it will not be displayed to end users. The order child documents are displayed is determined by the order of the HTML outputs in the template. To add custom publication types, update the document.xsl. To switch back to the drop-down list, update the variable useContentSelectionDropdown in imports.xsl to "true()".
